I first went skiing when I was 2 years old and spent a fair amount of time bundled up in one-piece snow suits. Suits that would be the envy of anyone in ironic costume celebrating gaper day today. So it isn’t too surprising that I love spending time in the mountains on skis then either.

So when I applied for a job last fall as a product designer at a local apparel design consultancy I knew just what to write about, my favorite ski jacket. This jacket is the perfect backcountry ski jacket. It is light, breathable, has a well articulated hood, asymmetrical wrist cuffs, and huge pokers for my climbing skins. It’s also green, my favorite color.

My story to them was of backcountry skiing. About all the minute details that can contribute to such a wonderful day skiing with friends. And about this jacket.

The thing is, that this jacket wasn’t real. It didn’t exist. It was my dream jacket. I wanted to build it so I drew it up, down to the zipper pulls.

6 months later I’m helping a friend look for a down jacket and start perusing the ski jackets. It’s kind of hard to differentiate all of the options so I kinda just click back and forth scanning the product details.

Then I see it. It’s green. It has huge pockets. Asymm cuffs. A big hood. And it’s even made of the same fabric. It was my jacket. Elated I bought it. It showed up, I ripped it out of the packaging.

It was not my jacket.

It had one crucial flaw, something not mentioned in the product description, a microfleece liner. One that would make this jacket too hot to wear touring, where layers need to be stacked so they can be taken on and off during the day.

I was sad. I was also happy. My jacket isn’t real. The search and the adventure continue.

It’s just for a split second that they are in these positions. The CRAZY thing to look at besides 200mm travel forks compressed to the limit is the chains.

Some of those bikes even have clutch derailleurs on them already and the chain still moves that much. By the way, your XC bike does the same thing, just scale down rider speed and travel.
